There are so many items that exist for humans to eat and drink.
Sometimes, it can be hard to keep our dogs from getting into our food.
This can be worrisome because the last thing we want is for our family pet to get sick because they ate something they were not supposed to.
Today I want to go over some of the foods that dogs can have as well as what we should avoid giving them.
While we all want to spoil our pets, and those puppy dog eyes are hard to ignore, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
List of Harmful Foods
Can dogs have apple juice? To put it simply, dogs should not be given apple juice.
Dogs should not be given juice of any kind. Juice contains tons of sugars that are bad for your dog’s health.
Is apple juice toxic to your dog? No. It is not. However, a dog drinking apple juice may end with diarrhea for your dog, and this probably will not be very fun for you to clean up either.
Here is yet another human food you should avoid giving to dogs at all costs. Even a small amount can turn lethal.
Dogs are not meant to eat anything that contains chocolate. Chocolate is poison to dogs.
This is due to a molecule in chocolate called theobromine. This molecule is deadly to dogs because their bodies cannot process it the way that humans can.
Another dangerous part of chocolate is the caffeine it contains. Caffeine can raise your dog’s blood pressure and even cause them to have seizures.
When it comes down to it, chocolate is one food that dogs should not be allowed to eat. If your dog does eat chocolate, watch out for signs of poisoning.
This includes, but is not limited to, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and tremors. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, call your vet right away.
While it is not common for a dog to be able to drink alcohol, it is dangerous for them.
The ingredients in different types of alcohol can be lethal. For example, wine comes from grapes.
Grapes are not good for dogs because they can cause kidney failure, and therefore, this makes wine a dangerous drink for any dog.
However, dogs should not have any type of alcohol. If your dog has had alcohol, they could seem restless and disoriented.
You may find your dog has tremors and pants more than is normal. Your dog could also vomit.
If you see any of these signs of alcohol poisoning in your dog, call the vet immediately.
Unlike apple juice, your dog will be in danger of more than a bad stomachache. If you can recognize the signs and act quickly, you could end up saving your best friend’s life.
Xylitol is not exactly a food all on its own, and you have likely never even heard of it.
The scary thing is, xylitol is an ingredient that can be found in many different food items, and you might not even know it.
Xylitol can be found in gum, mints, cake mix, candy, honey, jam, chocolate, and even some brands of peanut butter!
This ingredient can cause your dog to seem weak and uncoordinated. It can lower your dog’s blood sugar and even cause seizures.
Your dog may also vomit if they eat something containing xylitol.
Just like the other poisonous foods, contact a vet as soon as you can if your pup eats something with xylitol as an ingredient.
Luckily, while xylitol is dangerous, you can do your best to buy items that do not include xylitol in them.
If you do, just keep them away from your dog so they aren’t at risk of eating something harmful to them.
You may have heard before that your dog can have eggs. This is true, but you need to be careful that you are giving your dog cooked eggs.
Some people say that eggs will give your dog a shiny coat. Eggs contain vitamin A and are a great protein to give to your dog.
This can help with your dog’s coat, but only when they are cooked. Raw eggs can give your dog salmonella and make them sick.
Do some people give bowls of ice cream to their dogs as a nice treat? Yes.
Is this something that could poison your dog? No.
However, ice cream contains a lot of sugar. Way too much sugar for your dog to be having.
Some dogs are also lactose intolerant. If your dog can digest dairy and you want to give them a treat, consider plain sugar free yogurt to give to your dog instead.
List of Safe Foods
If you want something to give your dog to drink, broth is a safe option.
Avoid broth that contains onion powder and try to find a low-sodium broth to avoid adding extra salt into your dog’s diet.
However, if you get the right kind of broth, it can be extremely beneficial to your dog.
It does not exactly have loads of nutrients or vitamins, but a good broth can help your dog in other ways.
If your dog has not been eating well, broth is a great way to encourage them to eat their food.
Just a little bit of broth on top of their regular food should do the trick.
It can also help get a sick dog to recover. If your dog is not eating or drinking, you can offer them broth.
They are more likely to drink it, and if you water the broth down, it can help you make sure your dog is staying hydrated.
So long as the brand of peanut butter you choose does not contain xylitol, this is a wonderful choice for a treat to give to your dog occasionally.
Peanut butter does contain quite a bit of fat, so too much can lead to your dog gaining weight.
However, if you are careful and limit the amount of peanut butter you give to your dog, they should be allowed to indulge in this treat.
You can also use peanut butter in homemade dog treats, or you can just buy an already made peanut butter treat from the store.
Either way, it is safe for your dog to have.
Would you believe that blueberries are safe treats to give to your dogs? Well, they absolutely are.
Blueberries are full of antioxidants and vitamins that are amazing for your dog’s health.
You can give these to your dog frozen on a hot day, or you can just feed them to your dog regularly.
You should always make sure that any fruit you give to your dog has been washed prior, but if you are in search of an affordable treat that you and your dog can both enjoy, blueberries are a wonderful option.
Many dogs are completely in love with cheese.
Cheese is commonly used for wrapping dog medication in for those dogs that just will not take their medicine.
Cheese can also be used as a normal snack for dogs. However, cheese is high in fat.
So, you may want to give your dog low-fat cheeses.
This can be a good treat to give to your dog on special occasions.
You should also watch your dog as some dogs are lactose-intolerant and will not do well with cheese.
However, if your dog does well with cheese, it can be a good snack for them to eat from time to time.
Dogs may not be able to have apple juice, but normal apples are perfectly safe treats to give to your dog.
If they have been washed and cut into slices, they are safe. Do take care to remove all seeds from the apples before feeding them to your dog. Apples may be safe, but their seeds are not, so take caution.
