The color of a dog’s nose is determined by genetics. Typically, you see that they have a black nose because of the melanin deposit. But some dogs have a pink nose because they have less melanin in their nose and therefore, you should apply sunblock when you take them out on a sunny day.
Here’s a list of six dog breeds with pink noses.
#1 White German Shepherd
White German Shepherds are a kind of German Shepherd that are found in the US but are also recognized in Europe and have been since the 1880s. A common myth about this dog is that they are an albino version of the regular German Shepherd but that is not true.
These dogs have a white coat and are originally from Germany but they were later on bred in the US too. The dog is large and grows 22 to 26 inches in height and weighs 77 to 88 pounds. They live for 12 to 14 years and in terms of physical features, it is identical to a regular German Shepherd.
This breed of canines is known for their loyalty. In fact, they are even ready to risk their lives to protect their humans. But overall, they are of a cheerful disposition and are known for their obedience and confidence.
White German Shepherds are good herding and guard dogs and are also great family pets. When they are around strangers, they are alert and observant. Sometimes, they can get shy but most of the time, they are just gauging the strangers’ intentions. Once they are sure that there is no stranger danger, they will warm up to them.
These are playful dogs that are good at social events and like playing fetch and other physical activities with their humans.
#2 Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman Pinscher was first bred in the US and Canada in 1890, although they are originally from Germany. Like the Doberman, this dog also has a wide muzzle and they have a butterfly pink nose. It means that their nose has a few pigment spots and that is often referred to as a butterfly nose.
The Doberman Pinscher is a working group dog and grows up to 24 to 28 inches in height and weighs 60 to 80 pounds. These canines are said to live for 10 to 13 years.
Their ancestry is not entirely clear but they are said to be a mix of many dog breeds including the black and tan Terrier, German Pinscher and the Rottweiler. They have an athletic build and are energetic and intelligent dogs. Despite being good for military work and canine sports, these dogs are also used as family pets.
It is a big dog and it is recommended that you have a large crate so that they have a comfortable spot to relax. Their coat is short but you must have a brush handy so that you can do justice to their naturally regal appearance. And while you’re at it, pick up a massager too.
The Poodle is yet another dog with a pink nose and it comes in three variations: standard, miniature and toy. It is unclear whether it was a water dog in Germany or a French Barbet, but it is believed to have some aristocratic traits. Poodles have a coat that is curly and low allergen in nature. Despite its looks, it is athletic, smart and a great companion dog too.
The toy Poodle is about 10 inches tall, the miniature variety is about 15 inches or less and the standard variety Poodle is about 15 inches tall. But the build is the same for all of them. The standard variety has more strength and is bigger than the other two which also makes it the better athlete of them all. But all of them are easy to train.
This breed of dogs is quite active and you will need to take some time out every day for their exercise. This is also important because they are highly energetic and need to be kept busy. Swimming is a good idea because they do love getting into the water.
Since they were bred as hunting dogs, they are actually good with retrieving toys, balls and sticks. This means a game of fetch is always a good idea. They also like jogging with their humans.
#4 English Pointer
Here’s another pink-nosed dog that is known to be independent and has a strong will. It has an unlimited amount of energy and its need for exercise is quite high. For a brief period in time, the English Pointer was identified as a pistol dog in the UK because of their posture when they would detect games.
As the name suggests, these dogs were bred for the purpose of pointing. They have a short coat that is flat and comes in different colors like black, lemon with white or orange with white. Of course, it is possible to find them without the white too.
Pointers have very minimal grooming needs which is comforting for first-time dog parents. The males grow from 22 to 24 inches in height and weigh 55 to 75 pounds while the females are 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh about 44 to 66 pounds. They live for about 12 to 14 years.
These dogs are visually unique because of their long muzzle and chiseled good looks. They have high ears that are usually hanging by their sides. They have a strong and graceful body and a long neck.
But if you are thinking of getting a working dog as a pet that might not be a great idea because they are said to be a bit too high strung.
Samoyed dogs are also pink-nosed dogs and they are known to be extremely cute. This is a medium-sized dog and is categorized as a herding dog. This breed of dogs has a dense white coat that is double layered. They are named after the Samoyedic people who belong to Siberia.
These dogs were nomadic herders and were helpful in herding reindeer even as puppies. Their ears are in the shape of a triangle and the tail is curved. The coat has a smooth underlayer that serves as protection against cold weather.
These dogs are very muscular and even though they have short legs, they are very powerful when the dog needs to spring into action. These canines grow about two feet in height and the male dogs weigh up to 60 pounds while the female dogs are petite and weigh only about 35 pounds.
Sams, as they are called, have a broad chest and a long body. They have a pleasant temperament and are often called ‘smiling sammies’. They have an upturned mouth which gives their face amusing expressions. They have dark brown eyes and you can detect a swag in their step when they are excited.
#6 Golden Retriever
And finally, we have the Golden Retriever. This is a medium-sized dog that was originally raised to bring back ducks and game birds on a hunting trip. That’s where the name comes from. These dogs are very capable when it comes to retrieving game with their rather soft mouths.
The pink nose is not an inherent quality. So, if you spot it, make sure you protect them from the harsh sun.
