Yorkshire terrier teacups are small and adorable. It is important to learn how to train a teacup Yorkie as early as 8 to 10 weeks. Schedule time every day to work with your little companion so lessons learned are not easily forgotten. Training a teacup Yorkie can be time consuming, but very rewarding.
Obedience Training Instructions
1 Decide what behaviors are acceptable at home. Is your Yorkie expected to sleep with you or in a crate? When is barking acceptable and when is it not? Behavioral expectations vary between households, but once you decide on what is acceptable, stick with it.
2 Use a lightweight chair and leash to monitor your dog during training to show them that you are in charge. Harnesses support the small stature of a teacup Yorkie to allow for a safe workout.
3 Train your Teacup Yorkie at a time when you and your dog can work alone. Other pets or children can make it difficult for your dog to focus on your commands. Sessions should be short at the beginning, lasting no more than 15 minutes each.
4 Teach a command until your dog successfully mastered it. Create a solid foundation by teaching the command to “sit” first, followed by the command “hold.” Add additional commands such as “no”, “heel”, “down” and “out” to name a few. Add them one at a time until training has been completed for all commands.
5 Use the commands one or two short words and simple hand gestures constantly, so your Yorkie is not confused by complex commands.
6 Speak firmly to correct answers or inappropriate behavior and be careful not to yell at your dog. Let your dog know you mean it, but not in a way that will make them fear you.
7 Catch your Teacup Yorkie in the act of misbehavior and use these tenses to reinforce commands such as “no,” “out,” or “down” with additional training.
8 Compliment your dog when they witnessed acceptable behaviors. Offer rewards such as treats or affection.
9 Be patient! Teacup Yorkies are easily aroused and bored easily, so training can often be difficult.
How to Train A Teacup Yorkie – Tips and Warnings
Be consistent. Teacup Yorkies have a short attention span just like young children. Consistent reinforcement is necessary for successful training.
Due to the small size of your Teacup Yorkie, it is important not to hit your dog. Even a slight spanking to correct inappropriate behavior could seriously injure or kill your pet.
Now that you have learned the proper ways on how to train a teacup Yorkie, make sure to follow it through with proper care and love for your beloved dog!
